Turning Challenges into Leadership: Rutvik — 2026 Scout of the Year — Troop 440, Scottsdale

Leadership grows through challenges and the choice to step forward. For Rutvik, the 2026 Scout of the Year, that journey began as a shy Wolf Scout and evolved into guiding his troop, mentoring peers, and leaving a lasting impact on his community.

Rutvik is an Eagle Scout from Troop 440 in Scottsdale. He began his Scouting journey in second grade with Pack 33 in Westborough, Massachusetts, starting quietly in the background before discovering his confidence and leadership skills.

“When I first joined scouting, I was that quiet kid in the corner. But as I took on leadership positions like being the troop’s SPL and troop guide, I learned how to plan troop events, communicate effectively, and foster collaboration.”

Rutvik served as Senior Patrol Leader, Troop Guide, and Junior Assistant Scout Master, guiding his troop and mentoring fellow Scouts, including new Eagle candidates. His leadership is marked by empathy, collaboration, and dedication.

“A hike on the Auban Bear Jaw Loop Trail really taught me the importance of working together to push through challenges… we were able to use our collaboration to get down safely.”

For his Eagle Scout project, Rutvik led a team to build a 400-foot rattlesnake fence around a dog park at Lost Dutchman State Park, protecting the community and learning leadership, task management, and problem-solving along the way.

"Installing the fence was definitely a challenge, but I learned to embrace it and make quick decisions to solve problems. I’m really proud that it will serve the community for years to come.”

Beyond Scouting, Rutvik has pursued his passion for medicine, volunteering at the Mayo Clinic and authoring a research article on CRISPR and AI for cancer treatment under the mentorship of an oncologist at Texas Oncology.

Living the Scout Oath and Law

Rutvik sees the Scout Oath and Law as guiding principles, not just words.

“They aren’t just words, but key moral values that I have learned to live by, and they’ve definitely made me the best person I can be.”

Rutvik encourages other Scouts to embrace challenges, step out of their comfort zones, and develop confidence and independence through Scouting.

“Scouting prepares you to take on the world… it teaches skills you learn along the way through outdoor activities and community service projects.”

Through service, mentorship, and dedication, Rutvik continues to make a meaningful impact on his troop, his community, and all who follow his example. His leadership, empathy, and commitment reflect the lifelong values of Scouting.

As the 2026 Scout of the Year, Rutvik demonstrates the best of Scouting—stepping out of his comfort zone, embracing challenges, and growing as a leader.
