Troop 15, proudly chartered by American Legion Dwight Eisenhower Post 72 in Scottsdale, recently set out on an unforgettable adventure to the USS Midway Museum in San Diego. The trip gave Troop 15 a unique opportunity to step into history and experience life aboard one of America’s most iconic aircraft carriers.
Staying aboard the Midway alongside other Troops and Packs and representing Arizona was an experience Troop 15 won’t soon forget. From walking the decks to exploring the ship’s inner workings, they felt connected to the sailors who served aboard the vessel. The adventure wasn’t all history, though—the Scouts also enjoyed a fun beach outing that rounded out the trip perfectly.
Troop 15 was fascinated by the aircraft and helicopters on display. Many enjoyed climbing into cockpits and imagining themselves piloting the historic machines. A visit to the ship’s bridge offered hands-on interaction with the controls that steered the Midway, while the Damage Control Center—a hub for handling emergencies—gave them a real sense of the responsibilities sailors held during service.
The Scouts also loved learning about life on the flight deck, including the different colored vests that identified each sailor’s role. Experiencing these duties first-hand helped Troop 15 appreciate teamwork and coordination on a busy ship.
Guided tours and team activities on the beach provided valuable life lessons beyond history and naval operations. Troop 15 practiced inclusivity, welcoming younger kids into games and making sure everyone had a chance to participate. This simple act reinforced one of Scouting’s core values: service and kindness to others.
For Troop 15, success in Scouting comes from following a program that has proven itself for over 100 years. The troop is 100% Scout-led, which teaches young men and women time management, consensus building, and resourcefulness.
Most importantly, Troop 15 focuses on instilling the core values that make society stronger. On the way home, Troop 15’s Senior Patrol Leader noticed a man struggling with his takeout order and helped him—not for recognition, but because that is what Scouts do. Even the public noticed: the restaurant staff snapped a photo of the Scouts in uniform for their bulletin board, appreciating the example Troop 15 sets for the community.
Troop 15’s USS Midway outing is a reminder that Scouting is about more than adventures—it’s about learning, growing, and making a positive impact on others. Through experiences like this, Troop 15 continues to develop capable, confident, and compassionate young leaders.
