Campfire Connections: August 21 Alumni Gathering Celebrates Scouting’s Lasting Impact

The August 21st gathering honored friendships, service, and the enduring values of Scouting.

On August 21, 34 Scouting alumni gathered to rekindle friendships, share memories, and celebrate the life-changing impact of Scouting. Attendees included members of the 2014 Philmont Training Center strategic planning group, graduates of the Leadership Academy, and newly registered Alumni Association members.

The evening highlighted the Association’s mission of “welcoming alums back to the campfire.” Membership is open to anyone positively influenced by Scouting—you don’t need to be a former registered Scouter. Several spouses joined in, underscoring how far Scouting’s reach extends.

Past Council President and NESA Outstanding Eagle Scout Tom Curzon shared updates on recent council developments along with a personal Scouting story. He recalled striving to earn the Mile Swim badge at summer camp—an achievement that taught him perseverance and confidence, lessons that remain at the heart of Scouting.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Council Distinguished Alumnus Award to Colin F. Campbell. Colin’s career reflects a life of integrity, leadership, and service. He served five years as presiding judge of the Maricopa County Superior Court—one of the nation’s largest trial courts—and has chaired numerous law-related boards. His service and faith leadership have also been recognized nationally and within the Diocese of Phoenix for his steadfast support of Catholic Scouting. (See the Spotlight on Colin for more details.)

Looking ahead, Alumni Association Chair Dan Drake announced plans for future alumni gatherings in the Phoenix metro area, as well as in Flagstaff and Yuma. He encouraged attendees to invite Scouting friends and continue supporting the movement.

The evening’s stories and fellowship were a reminder that Scouting’s lessons last a lifetime—and that the campfire is always burning for those who wish to return.
