Pedaling Patriots: Troop 10’s Cycling Legacy Rolls On

For over 27 years, Troop 10 in Mesa, Arizona has been inspiring Scouts to challenge themselves on two wheels through their renowned “Pedaling Patriots” Cycling Merit Badge Program. Since its inception, more than 250 Scouts have completed at least one 50-mile ride with the Troop, many returning season after season to test their endurance and enjoy the camaraderie of the ride.

This year, two dedicated Scouts completed their 50-mile ride on Saturday, February 7, achieving the milestone in just five hours—a testament to their hard work and perseverance, supported by Troop 10’s experienced adult leaders.

The Pedaling Patriots program is led by long-time Scouter Dave Christ, who has devoted over 38 years to Scouting with the Scouting, Arizona Grand Canyon Council. Dave ensures Scouts have access to high-quality road bikes in every size, conducts bike maintenance classes, and teaches Arizona Rules of the Road safety sessions. His dedication, along with the support of sponsor Richard Prather, has made Troop 10’s cycling program one of the most comprehensive and family-friendly

Family participation is highly encouraged. Parents often join the ride program, and one year an entire family completed the 50-mile ride, with the Scout riding a tandem alongside a 5-year-old sibling. Alumni, Eagle Scouts, and previous leaders frequently return to join rides, fostering a true multigenerational community of riders.

Troop 10’s program has seen three generations of Scouters participate, with some going on to ride in RAGBRAI, the nearly 450-mile annual ride across Iowa. In 2024 and 2025, the Troop, supported by their charter organization Arizona Outdoor Wilderness Leaders (AZOWLs)participated in the El Tour de Scottsdale, a signature cycling event that brings Scouts together to ride in the community and showcase their skills.

What’s Ahead

Exciting rides continue for Troop 10 in 2026. AZOWLs will once again sponsor Pedaling Patriots to participate in the El Tour de Scottsdale this March, continuing the Troop’s tradition of adventure, skill-building, and community involvement.

Troop 10’s cycling program is more than just earning a merit badge—it’s a journey of endurance, teamwork, and creating memories that last a lifetime.
