Leadership isn’t always loud. Sometimes it looks like steady guidance, quiet confidence, and being ready when others need you most. For Tommy, the 2026 Scout of the Year, leadership has been a way of life shaped by years of service, mentorship, and living the Scout Oath and Law every day.
Tommy is a Life Scout and the Senior Patrol Leader of Troop 126 in Sun City. With more than 10 years in Scouting, his journey began as a Cub Scout Bear in third grade—following in the footsteps of a strong Scouting legacy within his family.
“My dad was a Scout, my uncle was a Scout, both my grandpas were Scouts. So it’s always been in my life.”
Tommy S., Life Scout, Troop 126
What keeps Tommy engaged year after year isn’t just the program—it’s the people, the experiences, and the opportunity to fully immerse himself in everything Scouting has to offer.
“I love the people in Scouting. I love the experiences… I love hearing their stories and really filling up the experience.”
Tommy S., Life Scout, Troop 126
As Senior Patrol Leader, Tommy is known for his maturity and ability to make every Scout feel valued. He consistently mentors younger Scouts while guiding his peers, creating a welcoming and supportive environment within his troop.
Those leadership skills extend well beyond Scouting. Tommy applies what he’s learned to school and community roles, including marching band and student council—proving that Scouting prepares youth for leadership in every part of life.
Many of Tommy’s favorite Scouting memories come from Camp Geronimo, where he served on the Aquatics Staff. As a lifeguard and instructor, he taught canoeing, kayaking, rowing, and lifesaving. Tommy has also volunteered as a lifeguard in his community, carrying his Scouting training into real-world service.
Tommy’s commitment to helping others was powerfully demonstrated when he earned the Scouting America Heroism Award. At just 16 years old, he witnessed a rollover car crash and immediately took charge—directing bystanders to call 911, freeing the trapped driver, and staying to assist until first responders arrived.
His actions reflected calm decision-making, courage, and preparedness—the very values Scouting strives to instill.
Living the Scout Oath and Law
For Tommy, the Scout Oath and Law aren’t just words—they’re a foundation.
“It’s really a way of life. It sits in the back of your head… when you need it, it sticks out and pushes how you would do anything in your normal life.”
Tommy S., Life Scout, Troop 126
As an older Life Scout, Tommy offers thoughtful advice to younger Scouts—reminding them that Scouting is more than checking off requirements.
“Being a Scout isn’t necessarily always about reaching that end goal of becoming an Eagle… everything you do along the way is just as important. Don’t waste that time trying to progress too fast. Just really have fun with it.”
Tommy S., Life Scout, Troop 126
Tommy continues to make a lasting impact on his troop, his community, and those he mentors. His leadership, integrity, and dedication reflect the best of Scouting. As the 2026 Scout of the Year, Tommy shows that Scouting isn’t just about the skills you learn—it’s about who you become.
