Flagstaff Honors Eagle Scout Myla O. with a Special Day of Recognition

Flagstaff Honors Eagle Scout Myla O. with ‘Myla O. Day’ for Leadership, Service, and Community Impact

On September 29, 2025, family, friends, and members of the Flagstaff Scouting community gathered to celebrate an incredible milestone: Eagle Scout Myla O. Court of Honor. The event was made even more special when the Mayor’s Office of Flagstaff proclaimed September 29 officially as “Myla O. Day” in recognition of her outstanding achievement and service to the community.

At just 15 years old, Myla has already distinguished herself as an inspiring young leader. Her Eagle Scout project, the construction of a catio and attached shed for the feral and recovering cats at the Coconino Humane Association, has made a meaningful impact on the animals and staff who care for them.

It was definitely a surprise to have a whole day dedicated to me since the Mayor kept what she was going to do at my Court of Honor very vague. It is definitely an honor, though.

Myla’s idea for her project grew naturally from her passion for helping animals.

“I had been volunteering at the Coconino Humane Association for about a year before I started planning my project, so it was easy to see what the shelter needed and what it didn’t,” she explained. “The quarantine shed for cats was very small and cramped, so I began speaking with the shelter’s director, Charlotte, and we figured out a plan to improve the cats’ lives — and that was how the catio was born.”

The finished space now provides a safer, more comfortable environment for cats in quarantine and recovery. A lasting gift to the community and its furry residents.

Myla’s accomplishments in Scouting go far beyond her Eagle project. She has earned 51 merit badges, completed National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT), and is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s National Honor Society.

She has served her troop in multiple leadership roles including Senior Patrol Leader, Order of the Arrow Representative, Historian, Quartermaster, and Patrol Leader and is among the 7% of Eagle Scouts who earned the rank in under three years. Even with this milestone behind her, Myla has no plans to slow down.

“I fully intend to keep volunteering in my community to the fullest I can, including at the Coconino Humane Association, the food bank, and other institutions,” she said. “I’ll continue to stay active in my troop and mentor younger Scouts — and when I head off to college, I plan to become a Junior Scoutmaster for a troop in that area.”

Scouting Arizona, Grand Canyon Council congratulates Eagle Scout Myla on this extraordinary achievement and thanks her for setting such a strong example of leadership, compassion, and dedication. Flagstaff is proud to celebrate “Myla Ostroha Day” — a reminder of what young people can accomplish through Scouting and service.
