Two outstanding members of Scouting Arizona; Grand Canyon Council were recognized among the state’s most accomplished young leaders as recipients of the 2026 JA 18 Under 18 Awards, organized by Junior Achievement Arizona on April 16, 2026.
Now in its ninth year, the annual awards program celebrates Arizona’s best and brightest youth who are making meaningful contributions in their schools, communities, and beyond.
Among this year’s recipients were two exceptional scouts from Scouting Arizona; Grand Canyon Council: Nolan Takeuchi and William Steenken.
Nolan Takeuchi
Nolan Takeuchi, Scouting Arizona; Grand Canyon Council’s Scout of the Year from Troop 7031 charted Federated Community Church in Flagstaff, was honored for his remarkable dedication to service and leadership.
Nolan founded Flagstaff’s only Venturing Crew and has volunteered for more than 500 hours with the Family Food Center. He also helped create and launch a nonprofit management course for high school students through the W. A. Franke School of Business at Northern Arizona University.
In addition, Nolan has contributed to conservation and sustainability initiatives through his work with the Arizona Governor’s Youth Commission. His efforts reflect the values of service and leadership that Scouting aims to instill.
William Steenken
William Steenken of Troop 278 charted Horizon Honors Schools in Phoenix was also recognized as a 2026 award recipient.
William earned distinction for his Eagle Scout Project, which transformed a neglected 1,200-square-foot central campus courtyard into a vibrant gathering space. He dedicated more than 100 volunteer hours to the project and led dozens of volunteers who contributed an additional 450 service hours.
The project included planning, land surveying, vegetation removal, artificial turf installation, and construction of shade sails—creating a welcoming and functional environment for the campus community.
