2025 Philmont Contingent: A Trek to Remember

12 Scouts. 12 Days. One unforgettable trek through the rugged peaks of Philmont Scout Ranch.

From June 8–20, 2025, a crew of 12 Scouts and adult Advisors from Scouting Arizona set out on the adventure of a lifetime: a 12-day Philmont Trek across the rugged, breathtaking trails of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico.

This year’s contingent immersed themselves in the beauty, challenge, and heritage of Philmont Scout Ranch, the iconic High Adventure base of Scouting America.

Mountain Miles and Meaningful Moments

The adventure began at Base Camp with Ranger Training, preparing the youth-led Crew to take on the challenges of backcountry life. Over the following days, the Scouts hiked over 90 miles of rocky, high-altitude terrain, sleeping under the stars and learning to live as part of a team. Their itinerary included both scenic and program-rich locations, where they explored the legacy of the Old West and tried their hands at everything from:

  • Blacksmithing at working forges, working together to create a unique implement to take home
  • Gold panning, where Scouts learned to sift for tiny treasures while respecting Leave No Trace principles
  • Mine tours, including history lessons of early miners in the region
  • Shooting historic muzzle-loading rifles, guided by expert instructors
  • Roping and branding, much like the early cowboys of the era
  • Conservation project, building BDAs (Beaver Dam Analogs) to restore original creek bottom flood plains
  • Rock climbing, rappelling, bouldering, under expert instruction using ropes, helmets, and carabiners
  • Living history camps, including southwestern homesteads coving two centuries, demonstrating animal husbandry, cooking, candle making, and the like
  • Spar pole climbing, replicating the efforts of professional foresters

To challenge events at COPE courses, designed to test communication, trust, and resourcefulness .

Some of the most unforgettable moments came at the Tooth of Time—Philmont’s iconic 9,003-ft landmark, and Mount Phillips—the second-tallest peak on the property at over 11,000-ft. Standing high above the valley floor, the Tooth and Mount Philips offer panoramic views and a perfect symbol of what it means to reach new heights, both literally and personally.

“Watching the Scouts grow as leaders, solve problems together, and push through challenges was inspiring. Philmont has a way of bringing out the best in each participant, achieving new heights as a single, cohesive unit.”

More Than a Trek

Philmont is known not just for its outdoor excitement but also for its ability to shape young people into confident, capable leaders. Crews train and plan together before arriving, forging bonds that strengthen every mile of the trail.

“Philmont is a place where Scouts find resilience, build friendships, and discover what they’re truly capable of. It’s an honor to see Arizona youth experience this journey.”

As Scouts hiked from basecamp to backcountry and back again, they carried more than packs on their shoulders—they carried the spirit of adventure, teamwork, and Scouting’s core values.
